Free Medical Screenings to Save Healthcare?

Healthcare is a serious issue in the United States. That’s no secret. People struggle to get health insurance and services are expensive for those who do not have health insurance. Yes, Obamacare is going to implement changes. Yes, but is that enough?

A group of friends and myself wanted to address the lack of medical services for underprivileged members of the community, so we founded Universal Health Aid. Universal Health Aid is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health and lifestyle conditions of those who are underprivileged. To do this, Universal health Aid hosts annual free medical screenings. How these screenings differ from other screenings is that they are a one stop shop for a variety of services such as gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, internal medicine, and dermatology. These are only a few of the services provided at the Universal Health Aid medical screenings. The events are planned out by students and local community leaders in the area. Currently, there are three chapters located in Toledo, Ohio; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Monroe Michigan.

So do I think that we are making a difference in these communities. Yes, but as the problems evolve, so must our solutions. I do not think it is enough to simply provide a solution. For any business to be successful, there needs to be a sustainable and long term plan. How Universal Health Aid plans to do this is to empower local members of the community to run these events. Furthermore, using youth, such as high school and college students is a great way to build leaders for the future and allow students to obtain real world experience. We also plan to start building a health education program. Progression is everything.
